Prepreg, SMC and BMC for Composites Manufacturing
Prepregs are advanced composite materials created by impregnating high strength woven or knitted fibers with either thermoset or thermoplastic resins. Composites One offers an extensive range of prepreg materials as well as SMC and BMC for advanced composites manufacturing.
The controlled production process using prepregs ensures a precise fiber-to-resin ratio and ply thickness, producing consistently high-quality and structurally robust laminates. Prepregs offer excellent flexibility with various fiber options like glass, carbon, or aramid, available in unidirectional, woven, or non-crimp fabric configurations. The choice of resin depends on factors such as mechanical performance, temperature resistance, chemical compatibility, processing conditions, and end-use.
Thermoplastic Prepreg
- Types include: PEEK, PEI, PPS, PA, PP, PE, PC, PSU, PES, and others.
- Indefinite room-temperature shelf life.
- Can withstand multiple reshaping cycles by heating above the matrix’s glass transition temperature or melting point. After heating they solidify when cooled at room temperature.
- Each type has distinct properties tailored to specific engineering needs.
Thermoset Prepreg
- Comprised of a saturated fiber reinforcement with a pre-mixed liquid thermoset resin.
- Generally requires refrigerated or frozen storage.
- Consolidation and curing occur through simultaneous elevated pressure and heat application.
- Flexible application with near-infinite combinations of fibers, fiber patterns and resins.
